WICHITA, Kan. (TCN) -- A man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for attempted murder after he tried to drown his pregnant girlfriend in a pond.
The Wichita Eagle reports Dominic Thomas, 24, was sentenced Jan. 7. After a four-day trial, he was found guilty of attempted first-degree murder in 2024.
On Sept. 19, 2020, Thomas, who was 19 at the time, attempted to drown his girlfriend, 17. She was 35 weeks pregnant and has not been named by authorities.
Thomas told police he was upset when his girlfriend posted baby shower photos on Facebook. He was allegedly involved with another woman at the time and was angry that the photos revealed his existing relationship with the victim, according to the Wichita Eagle.
Thomas then reportedly threatened his pregnant girlfriend via text messages and lured her out to walk with him before putting her in a headlock and dragging her to a pond by her feet.
A probable cause affidavit obtained by the Wichita Eagle says he held her head underwater while she screamed to be let go. He stopped when she mentioned their unborn child. According to the affidavit, when the victim was examined at the hospital, her child was still moving and had a heartbeat.
