Doctor who tried to kill wife on hiking trail found guilty of attempted manslaughter

HONOLULU (TCN) -- An anesthesiologist accused of trying to kill his wife on a hiking trail in March 2025 has been found guilty of attempted murder.
On March 24, 2025, Dr. Gerhardt Konig, 47, tried to throw his wife, 37-year-old Arielle Konig, off an overlook when she refused to take a picture with him. He was arrested later that day.
People reports Konig had testified that he attacked Arielle Konig in self-defense. On March 26, Arielle Konig spoke in court and said that while on the seaside trail for a birthday hike, Konig tried to pull her to the edge of a steep cliff, attempted to inject her with an unknown substance, and then hit her head with a rock. He then fled when two other hikers called 911 after hearing her screaming. Those witnesses also testified at trial.
The couple’s son, Emile Konig, testified against Konig and said that shortly after the attack, his father called him and told him what he had done and that he was going to jump off a cliff, People reports.
The Associated Press reports a jury returned a guilty verdict against Konig on April 8 after a day of deliberations. They convicted him of attempted manslaughter based on extreme mental or emotional disturbance.
Following the conviction, prosecuting attorney Steve Alm said, “It’s a good day for the good guys.”
Konig’s attorney, Thomas Otake, said his client plans to appeal. Per the AP, Konig will face up to 20 years in prison when sentenced Aug. 13.
