Calif. woman found naked in suitcase in her apartment, boyfriend charged with murder

BERKELEY, Calif. (TCN) -- A 28-year-old man is behind bars after the naked body of his girlfriend was found wrapped in plastic bags inside a rolling suitcase.
The Berkeley Scanner reports the victim, whose name has not been released, was last seen on surveillance footage May 24 entering her apartment with her boyfriend, Demarcus Jones. Two days later, footage captured Jones allegedly returning to the apartment with a black rolling suitcase.
Berkeleyside reports the victim was 37 years old.
On May 30, the apartment building’s property manager found the body inside the suitcase after the victim’s loved ones became concerned when they could not reach her, according to the Berkeley Scanner. The property manager then called the police and a homicide investigation began.
An autopsy conducted on the victim showed she suffered from head injuries that may have been caused by blunt force trauma, as well as neck injuries, according to the Berkeley Scanner. Phone records placed Jones at the apartment between May 24 and May 27, according to KRON.
Jones was arrested on June 2. After he was read his Miranda rights, he allegedly told police he had killed the woman, put her remains in the suitcase, left the windows open, and turned on an air purifier to dissipate any smell, according to the Berkeley Scanner. Jones was charged with murder on June 4 and is being held without bail.
According to Berkeleyside, Jones was on probation when he was arrested in connection with the victim’s death. He had been convicted of felony assault in 2019 for beating a man and calling him a homophobic slur after the man objected to Jones’ driving.
