Tenn. funeral home owner indicted on 52 counts connected with alleged fraud, mishandling of remains

FENTRESS COUNTY, Tenn. (TCN) -- A 37-year-old funeral home owner has been arrested on a 52-count indictment following an investigation into his business practices and the alleged mishandling of human remains.
Chadrick “Chad” Mundy was arrested Sept. 23, WLVT reports. Mundy, owner of the Mundy Funeral Home in Jamestown, Tennessee, had had his operating license suspended by the State Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers in August after an investigation found he had allegedly filed false life insurance claims for people who were living, including his wife.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation began looking into Mundy’s business conduct in May at the behest of 8th Judicial District Attorney General Jared Effler, according to WLVT. In addition to the alleged fraudulent life insurance claims, the investigation also found that Mundy allegedly mishandled cremated human remains, filed false claims related to burial policies, and exploited elderly clients for financial purpose.
One family claimed their relative’s remains were not returned to the funeral home for 51 days, WBIR reports. Amy Stockton, the daughter-in-law of Janie Stockton, told the outlet, “We had talked about how she didn’t have a burial policy, and [Mundy] had suggested that, in lieu of flowers, donations toward the funeral expenses would be an option. … So we chose to do that.”
Stockton also told the outlet the funeral home said the donations were not calculated correctly, so they gave the family a refund check. The donations had allegedly been made to the funeral home, the family said. The refund check bounced and came back as “account closed,” Stockton alleged.
The family learned that Janie Stockton’s cremated remains were allegedly not picked up from the crematory for 51 days.
On Sept. 23, Mundy was indicted on 15 counts of theft of property of $2,500, 12 counts of fraudulent insurance act, nine counts of financial exploitation of an elderly or vulnerable adult, five counts of theft of property over $1,000, four counts of abuse of a corpse, four counts of theft of property under $1,000, two counts of criminal simulation, and one count of worthless checks. He is behind bars on $80,000 bond, according to WLVT.
