Navy chief accused of fatally shooting husband while he was calling 911

SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. (TCD) -- A 34-year-old Navy chief officer was arrested Wednesday when she allegedly fatally shot her husband while he was in the middle of calling 911 for help.

At a press conference Thursday, Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson announced Bree Kuhn was charged with first-degree premeditated murder of her husband, Collin James Turner.

According to Johnson, at 12:53 p.m., Kuhn called 911 regarding "an argument in reference to her kids." Johnson said a second call came in at 4:57 p.m., but it was Turner who phoned 911 that time. Johnson said that call also had to do with their kids and no one was arrested because there was no evidence of a physical altercation.

At 6:22 p.m., Turner called 911 again and told dispatch Kuhn locked him in the garage. Johnson said a gunshot was audible in the background and he "states, basically, 'She just shot me.'" Then there were three more shots.

Deputies arrived on scene four minutes later and found Turner deceased inside the garage. Johnson said their three children were inside the home when Turner was killed. Two of them are now in custody with DCF.

Johnson said Kuhn allegedly used a personal handgun, not a military-issued one.

Johnson said in his press conference Kuhn was in “shock” when deputies arrived and was taken into custody two minutes after they arrived. According to Johnson, all three arguments were reportedly about their children.

"You’re a Navy chief one day and the next day, you’re in jail," he said.

Mark Alderman, the assistant state attorney, joined Johnson in the press conference and said Kuhn faces mandatory life in prison or the death penalty if convicted.

According to WEAR-TV, Kuhn is on leave from the Navy. She was stationed at NAS Pensacola.
