WEXFORD COUNTY, Mich. (TCD) -- One man’s attempt at staying hidden didn’t last very long after state police located him under bedsheets following an alleged carjacking.
According to a statement, on Monday, April 10, at 2:54 a.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police Cadillac Post received a call about a car that had been stolen from a local gas station. The victim said he went inside the gas station and when he exited, his vehicle was nowhere to be found.
Around the same time, Michigan State Police troopers learned about an abandoned car in a ditch near East 28 and South 37 roads. The driver’s side door was open, but no one was inside. Michigan State Police began investigating the car in the ditch while Cadillac Police Department officers went to the gas station to check surveillance footage. Officials confirmed the car in the ditch matched the one stolen from the gas station moments earlier.
Michigan State Police deployed a canine team and located the suspect, 32-year-old Alexander Dumas, hiding about 200 yards from the crash "underneath two large bedsheets in the thick of pine trees."
He was arrested and booked into the Wexford County Jail on charges of unlawful driving away of motor vehicle, malicious destruction of property over $1,000 under $20,000, failure to report a crash, and habitual offender.
His bond was set at $25,000.
