GAITHERSBURG, Md. (TCD) -- A 54-year-old man was apprehended in West Virginia over the weekend after he allegedly killed a parole officer during a visit.
According to Montgomery County Police, on Friday, May 31, just before 6 p.m., officers were asked to conduct a welfare check at a home in Chevy Chase because a Maryland Parole and Probation agent did not come back to work after conducting a check on Emanuel Edward Sewell, a convicted sex offender. Officers went to Sewell's home and found the victim, Davis Martinez, deceased.
Police said Martinez "suffered multiple injuries" and that his death was being investigated as a homicide, but they did not elaborate on potential cause of death.
Montgomery County Police announced Saturday, June 1, that U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force officers located Sewell in West Virginia and captured him during a traffic stop. Sewell was booked into the Putnam County Jail on a charge of second-degree murder and will be extradited back to Maryland.
Court records show Sewell has a criminal history with arrests for robbery, assault with intent to rob, burglary, sex offenses, and more.
The Maryland Department of Public Safety said Martinez is the first Division of Parole and Probation agent to be killed by a client on duty. Martinez had been with the department for six years.
According to a GoFundMe organized by Martinez's family, Martinez took care of his 66-year-old mother and 29-year-old autistic brother.
Secretary of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Carolyn Scruggs said in a statement, "Parole and Probation employees are unsung heroes. We extend our deepest condolences to Agent Martinez's family and co-workers. His professionalism, diligence and resilience will remain engraved in our hearts."
Parole and Probation Director Martha Danner added, "Davis Martinez was a thorough and caring agent who sought to help clients improve their lives. The Silver Spring office will sorely miss him because he was a sensitive soul who always helped everyone."
