MINNEAPOLIS (TCD) -- A former probation officer was convicted Monday for her role in the kidnapping and murder of a Minneapolis real estate agent.
According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Elsa Segura was found guilty of aiding and abetting premeditated first-degree murder, aiding and abetting attempted premeditated first-degree murder, aiding and abetting kidnapping, and aiding and abetting first-degree murder while committing kidnapping.
On December 31, 2019, Segura reportedly lured Monique Baugh to a fake home showing in Maple Grove. Baugh was later kidnapped and shot in a Minneapolis alley.
The criminal complaint reports that Baugh went to the home showing at 8300 Niagara Avenue in Maple Grove. Baugh allegedly received multiple calls on her cell phone from an unknown number by a woman who went by the alias Lisa Powalski. According to the criminal complaint, no other calls were made from that phone except to Baugh. Investigators determined Segura left messages on Baugh’s phone from that number.
According to the criminal complaint, one of Segura’s co-conspirators, Cedric Berry, rented a U-Haul van on December 30. The next day, Baugh was abducted and placed in the van.
On December 31, Minneapolis Police arrived at the 1300 block alley of Russell Avenue after receiving a report of shots fired. They discovered Baugh lying in the alley and determined she had been shot three times. A .45 DCC was located near her body, and police observed that her wrists had been taped.
Video surveillance showed a U-Haul exiting the alley at around the same time of the shooting. Baugh later died from related injuries.
Also on December 31, the van reportedly drove to Baugh’s house and a masked gunman shot Baugh’s boyfriend. According to the Star Tribune, Segura’s boyfriend and Baugh’s boyfriend previously had a falling out.
KSTP-TV reports that Cedric Berry and a second accomplice, Berry Davis, were found guilty of kidnapping, first-degree attempted murder, and first-degree murder. Both men were sentenced to life in prison, according to KSTP.
Segura had worked for Hennepin County in their Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation from June 2014 to December 2019, most recently as a probation officer, according to KSTP.
KTSP reports Segura faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. She will be sentenced November 9.
