DETROIT -- (WXYZ) -- Two Minnesota mothers have been charged for bringing their daughters to a Livonia clinic for the female genital mutilation procedure.
The indictment comes five months after federal prosecutors began pursuing the first female genital mutilation case in U.S. history.
The moms are charged with conspiracy and genital mutilation.
There are now 8 defendants named in the case - including Dr. Jumana Nagarwala of Northville. She's the doctor accused of performing the procedure.
She's been held without bail since her arrest in April and is set to go to trial next month.
Meanwhile, state lawmakers voted to allow the termination of parental rights for anyone who has their child undergo female genital mutilation.
The house bill follows legislation signed into law in June making the procedure a crime in Michigan.
