DES MOINES, Iowa (TCD) -- A 31-year-old mother was arrested and charged in connection with the drowning death of her 9-month-old son.
According to WOI-TV, on June 16, Twyla Schiebel left her baby in the bathtub in a seat with no safety belt. She reportedly went to another room to read to her 9-year-old child, and when she returned, the infant was lying down with his face underwater.
Schiebel’s son was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, WOI reports. An autopsy report confirmed the child’s cause of death was drowning, according to WHO-TV.
Schiebel reportedly told police she realized her son "would have been able to get out of the seat on his own."
Schiebel attempted to avoid arrest by providing an officer with her sister’s name, WHO reports.
She was arrested and booked into the Polk County Jail on Sept. 30 for providing false information for citation and child endangerment resulting in death, records show.
According to WHO, Schiebel appeared in court on Friday, Sept. 30, and her bond was set at $25,000. She is scheduled to appear in court next on Oct. 10.
