COAHOMA COUNTY, Miss. (TCD) -- A 25-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly fatally shot two young children and held another at gunpoint.
On Monday, Jan. 9, at approximately 2 a.m., deputies from the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a child shot at the Coldwater River Road Apartments in Jonestown. An off-duty deputy who lives in the area reportedly went to the scene and found the suspect, Marquez Griffin, "holding a child at gunpoint."
Deputies reportedly "were able to talk the subject into dropping his weapon and get the child to safety."
According to the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office, deputies learned a 9-year-old male and 1-year-old female had suffered fatal gunshot wounds before they arrived at the apartments. One of the children was reportedly deceased prior to deputies’ arrival, and the other was taken to the emergency room in Clarksdale. The Sheriff’s Office said the child did not survive.
WREG-TV reports the 1-year-old girl was identified as Averi Jones.
Griffin reportedly recently moved back to Jonestown from Arlington, Texas, and was booked into the Coahoma County Adult Detention Center on two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault.
