SALT LAKE CITY (TCD) -- A 27-year-old professional bull rider was fatally shot earlier this week hours after he performed at the Utah State Fair.
According to a police statement, on Monday, Sept. 12, at 12:06 a.m., Salt Lake City Police Department officers responded to a call about a man shot near 900 S. 200 West. When officers arrived, they found Demetrius Omar Lateef Allen outside the apartment complex with "at least one" gunshot wound and they attempted lifesaving measures. Inside the apartment, officers discovered "multiple bullet holes."
He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died.
Allen, a Texas native, was a professional bull rider who went by the name Ouncie Mitchell.
Salt Lake City Police said they took 21-year-old LaShawn Denise Bagley into custody. Bagley and Allen were reportedly in an "on and off" relationship, and Allen traveled to the city to perform at the Utah State Fair and stay with her.
Police reportedly believe Allen and Bagley got into an argument at a bar following the fair.
Bagley was booked on charges of murder and felony discharge of a firearm.
According to KSL-TV, Allen competed at the Utah State Fair on Sunday night, just hours before he was killed. Sean Gleason, CEO of the Professional Bull Riders, wrote a statement about Allen’s death and called him a "talented cowboy."
Gleason said, "Ouncie got his name because he was born small. He grew up to compete with a huge heart."
Records show Bagley is being held without bond.
KHOU-TV reports Allen was the father of a 4-year-old girl.
Allen's mom, Laquita Allen, told KHOU, "This tragedy is very unexpected. We expected him to die by the bull, not by the bullet. I really don’t know the details. I don’t want to know the details. My only thing is getting my son home."
