MEMPHIS, Tenn. (TCD) -- A 27-year-old man was arrested earlier this week after allegedly stabbing his parents to death while two young children were home.
According to a press release from the Columbia Police Department, on Monday, April 18, Christopher and Katrina Gaines were stabbed to death on Skyline Drive. Investigators reportedly processed the crime scene and identified the victims’ son Demondra Gaines as the suspect.
Columbia Police Department Captain Jeremy Haywood said in a press conference, "Evidence recovered from the crime scene proves the death of Christopher and Katrina Gaines to be the result of a brutal stabbing attack." Haywood added the couple’s 27-year-old son Demondra Gaines "is responsible for the attack on these two individuals." Gaines reportedly fled the scene after the alleged attack.
According to police, two children, ages 3 and 2, were inside the home at the time of the stabbing but were not harmed. The children are now reportedly in the care of their parents. According to WSMV-TV, police did not disclose the children’s relationship with the victims, but the brother of Demondra Gaines identified them as his kids in the 911 call.
Police obtained arrest warrants for the suspect for two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault resulting in death, and one count of theft of a motor vehicle.
On April 19 at around 9:45 p.m., police announced that Gaines had been located at a motel and was taken into custody in Memphis. The car he reportedly stole and used was recovered.
