PHOENIX (TCD) -- Police officers are searching for information after they reportedly discovered the remains of a newborn in an alleyway.
According to the Phoenix Police Department, on Tuesday, July 12, at 5:45 a.m., officers responded to a call at 33rd Avenue and Pierson Street and located the deceased newborn. Phoenix Police Sgt. Philip Krynsky said in a news conference that a concerned citizen called 911 after they "observed some suspicious items" nearby. When officers got to the scene, they found the body and transported it to the medical examiner’s office.
The child had likely been there since between Monday, July 11, at midnight and Tuesday, July 12, when police arrived.
Krynsky said investigators do not believe the person who called police is involved in the child’s death.
Though Krynsky did not specify where the newborn was found, he shared, "It was not inside a residence. It was out in an open area."
AZFamily.com reports the witness made the discovery in an alleyway not far from Grand Canyon University. While police did not reveal the child’s gender, Krynsky noted the victim was an "obvious newborn."
In March, a deceased newborn was found inside a bathroom at a local McDonald’s. Krynsky said at the news briefing that case remains open and he hopes any individuals involved in either case come forward so they can "get the medical care that they deserve."
The investigation remains ongoing.
