WASHINGTON (TCD) -- Police have arrested a 22-year-old man nearly a week after he allegedly killed a 25-year-old Kentucky teacher and wrestling coach on Catholic University campus.
On Wednesday, July 5, at around 8:22 a.m., Fourth District officers from the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department responded to the 600 block of Alumni Lane NE to a report of a shooting and found Maxwell Emerson suffering from gunshot wounds. D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services transported Emerson to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
In a statement, the Catholic University of America said the fatal shooting occurred on their campus following an altercation in the plaza in front of Father O'Connell Hall. The university noted that no campus community members were harmed in the incident.
Police posted surveillance photos of the suspect and offered a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone who could provide information leading to an arrest.
According to WAVE-TV, surveillance video reportedly shows the suspect walking with Emerson before he allegedly shot him. Afterward, the suspect reportedly fled the scene on foot.
Investigators initially believed the suspect and victim knew each other, but Emerson's mother told WAVE they didn't.
According to WAVE, an individual noticed the suspect on the city's subway, recognized him from the surveillance photos, and called police. On Tuesday, July 11, police arrested the suspect, Jaime Maceo, also known as Jaime Macedo, on a charge of first-degree murder while armed.
Emerson was reportedly in Washington, D.C., to visit family for the Independence Day holiday and was en route to the Library of Congress for a professional development workshop when he was fatally shot.
Emerson's mother told WAVE her son sent her a distorted Snapchat message before the shooting, and she later realized he was telling her he was being robbed at gunpoint.
Prior to his death, Emerson worked as a teacher and wrestling coach at Oldham County High School.
