SONORA, Calif. (TCD) -- A 20-year-old man was arrested and charged after allegedly kidnapping a female victim, threatening to kill her, and tying her up in a car.
According to a news release from the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office, on Friday, March 10, shortly before 6 a.m., Sonora Police responded to a report of a kidnapping near Shepherd and Lyons streets, where they found a female victim suffering from "major injuries."
She was transported to the hospital and later told investigators that Jacob Chapman kidnapped and assaulted her after she gave him a ride the night before to his home near Red Heather Drive. Once they arrived at the home, Chapman allegedly "attacked her, striking her multiple times in the head with a flashlight."
He also reportedly threatened the woman with a gun, made her drive to other locations, and told her he’d kill her unless she gave up her bank account information.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the victim said Chapman tied her "wrists and ankles with duct tape" and threatened to kill her "if she tried to escape."
Chapman reportedly drove the vehicle to numerous locations and then tied the woman up and left her inside the car. Eventually, the woman was able to escape and asked an individual to call for help.
The Sheriff’s Office performed a "protective sweep of the Columbia area and state park" due to the "severity of the crimes."
During the sweep, detectives reportedly recovered a stolen 9 mm Smith and Wesson pistol that Chapman had allegedly dropped in the park.
On Saturday, March 11, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Chapman turned himself in to police and was arrested on charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats, and brandishing a firearm, the Sheriff’s Office said.
