DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. (TCD) -- A 53-year-old mother was found guilty of medically abusing and plotting to kidnap her son from a foster home.
According to a news release from the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, in 2019, Cynthia Abcug’s son was removed from her care. Prior to the removal, Abcug claimed her son suffered from seizures, heart problems, and a brain tumor, and that he was dying. However, medical staff said there were no signs her son was suffering from any of the issues.
Abcug, who allegedly has Munchausen syndrome by proxy, "planned to take her son back with the assistance from unknown individuals, possibly QAnon, a far-right political and conspiracy theory movement," the D.A.’s Office said.
During her testimony, Abcug reportedly said she did not know anything about QAnon, but she did say she knew people from "Children’s Crusade," an online group of people who claimed to know how to help her get her son back.
According to the D.A.’s Office, Abcug said her daughter reported the conspiracy to police, and "a man in her home from 'Children’s Crusade' received an order to kidnap Abcug. She was eventually arrested in December of 2019 in Montana."
The D.A.’s Office said Abcug’s daughter, who was 16 years old in 2019, and her adult son testified against her in court about the plot to kidnap their brother.
Abcug is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 6.
