CHARLEVOIX COUNTY, Mich. (TCD) -- A 34-year-old man will spend several years in prison for abusing his ex-girlfriend's 15-month-old, including biting the boy and fracturing his bones.
According to The Petoskey News-Review, John Paul Fiedorek was sentenced in Charlevoix Circuit Court to 18 to 36 years for first-degree child abuse and 80 months to 10 years for two counts of second-degree child abuse. The terms will be served concurrently.
Judge Roy C. Hayes III reportedly said during the sentencing, "Mr. Fiedorek brutally physically assaulted a helpless 15-month-old child who was left in his care."
Fiedorek was convicted in March, The Petoskey News-Review reports. The trial lasted two weeks after two previous mistrials.
According to the Charlevoix County Sheriff's Office, on Sept. 17, 2019, detectives went to Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital after receiving a call about suspected child abuse. The 15-month-old son's biological mother reportedly brought him to the hospital, and he was "placed in protective custody immediately."
The Sheriff's Office said the boy "had numerous signs of severe abuse." WPBN/WGTU-TV reports the little boy suffered bite marks, bruises, and fractured ribs.
