CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (TCD) -- A grand jury recently indicted two people on charges related to the slaying of a man whose body was found in a wooded area in 2022.
The Florida State Attorney’s Office for the 20th Judicial Circuit announced that a grand jury returned the indictment June 8, charging Andrew Smith and Melissa Dymond-Demetrowitz with first-degree murder with a firearm, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder with a firearm, and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence in connection with the death of Shawn Patrick Armstrong.
The State Attorney’s Office alleges that between Sept. 8, 2022, and Sept. 13, 2022, Smith and Dymond-Demetrowitz "conspired to murder" Armstrong. The duo reportedly lured Armstrong to a wooded area and fatally shot him with a weapon purchased by Smith on or around Sept. 13, 2022.
After the fatal shooting, Smith and Dymond-Demetrowitz reportedly placed the victim’s body in his own vehicle, drove the remains to Lee County, and dumped the body "beneath palm fronds in another wooded area."
According to the State Attorney’s Office, officials later performed a traffic stop on Smith and Dymond-Demetrowitz, who were driving the victim’s truck at the time.
The State Attorney’s Office did not specify the suspects’ relationship to the victim.
Smith and Dymond-Demetrowitz remain held in the Charlotte County Jail without bond.
