LOS ANGELES (TCD) -- A 30-year-old woman and her 29-year-old boyfriend were arrested last week after a 7-year-old girl died at the hospital due to what investigators believe was abuse.
According to Los Angeles County Jail inmate records, Malachi Whalen and Ida Brockman were booked into jail Friday and are being held on $2 million bail each. KABC-TV reports they were both charged with murder, but Whalen was also charged with torture and assault on a child causing death. Brockman was reportedly charged with child abuse resulting in death.
KTLA-TV reports doctors from Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital called police September 9 for suspected fatal abuse. Brockman and Whalen reportedly drove the little girl to the hospital.
According to CBSLA-TV, authorities from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement, "Investigators learned the victim’s mother and her boyfriend brought her to the emergency room unresponsive by way of their personal vehicle."
The Sheriff’s Department added, "The victim sustained multiple injuries that were inconsistent with statements made by the mother and her boyfriend."
Investigators went to Brockman’s apartment on the 3000 block of El Segundo Boulevard and reportedly called it a "crime scene."
