UPDATE 11:44 a.m. PT:
Los Angeles County officials held a news conference at 11:30 a.m. local time.
According to L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva, the Santa Clarita sheriff's station received a report of shots fired at Saugus High School at 7:38 a.m.
Sheriff's deputies arrived on campus at 7:40 a.m. and encountered six victims in the quad area of the school. The victims were triaged and hospitalized.
The shooting suspect, a 16-year-old Asian male student at the school, was one of the six transported, Villanueva said. The suspect remains hospitalized in grave condition.
Witnesses and video surveillance have confirmed the shooter's identity, according to the sheriff.
L.A. County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau Captain Kent Wegener said that today is the suspect's birthday.
The weapon was found at the scene, described as a .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol, which was empty, Wegener said.
The suspect's Santa Clarita residence was located and investigated for possible further victims. A search warrant was in process.
Wegener said the suspect's girlfriend and his mother were being interviewed at the sheriff's station.
Wegener said school surveillance video clearly shows the suspect take a gun from his backpack, shoot five people, then himself. No further individuals are suspected in the shooting, officials said.
One female student, age 16, died at the hospital. Also hospitalized are two females, 14 and 15 years old, and two 14-year-old male students.
