OMAHA, Neb. (TCD) -- A 27-year-old woman was arrested after she allegedly gave birth on a sidewalk and abandoned the newborn over the weekend.
According to the Omaha Police Department, on Sunday, Feb. 13, officers responded to 24th and P streets at approximately 10:02 a.m. to perform a welfare check on the new mother, Trinity Shakespeare. According to the Omaha World-Herald, someone with Shakespeare had called authorities because Shakespeare was in pain.
At the scene, officers reportedly found Shakespeare’s abandoned baby boy, and he was transported to a local hospital for treatment due to being exposed to cold temperatures.
Police say Shakespeare was also transported to the Nebraska Medical Center for treatment. She and her baby are reportedly expected to survive the cold exposure.
Upon further investigation, Shakespeare was reportedly arrested and booked into the Douglas County Correctional Center on Tuesday, Feb. 15, after being released from the hospital. The Omaha World-Herald reports that she faces felony child abuse charges.
Shakespeare is reportedly the mother to two other children but lost custody in August 2018 after leaving them with a man who was not their father. According to the Omaha World-Herald, the man told authorities Shakespeare seemed intoxicated but that he was "a drunk" and unsuitable to take care of the children.
Shakespeare was sentenced to 200 days on child abuse by neglect charges for the 2018 incident, and the children were placed in emergency protective custody, the Omaha World-Herald reports.
