NEW YORK (TCD) -- An 11-year-old girl was fatally shot this week by a stray bullet when people riding on a scooter opened fire as they aimed for someone else.
According to the New York Police Department, on Monday, May 16, at approximately 4:50 p.m., officers from the 41st Precinct responded to a shooting call at Westchester Avenue and Fox Street and found an 11-year-old girl with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Police assisted EMS in getting the child to the ambulance. She was taken to Lincoln Hospital in critical condition, but she ultimately died from her wounds.
The little girl has been identified as Kyhara Tay.
NYPD officials said a preliminary investigation determined a male was running on Fox Street and Westchester Avenue towards 165th Street as two men on a scooter chased him. The male being chased reportedly tried entering 1015 Fox St., which caused the scooter to pass by him. The male then turned around and went back on Fox Street, which caused the suspects on the scooter to open fire. One of the rounds traveled down Fox Street and hit the girl.
According to CBS New York, Tay made her way into a nail salon as witnesses ran in to help stop the bleeding.
