NEW YORK (TCD) -- A 31-year-old man was reportedly shot and killed on the set of a "Law & Order" spinoff as he sat in a car early Tuesday morning.
According to NBC New York, the victim, Johnny Pizarro, was sitting in a car on North Henry Street in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood when a suspect reportedly opened his car door and began firing at about 5:15 a.m. Pizarro was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals / Woodhull, where he died soon after.
The New York Police Department reportedly confirmed to NBC New York that Pizarro was hired as an outside contractor to help clear the streets and make space for the show’s trucks to park.
According to Deadline, another crew member allegedly saw a man run away from the area with "something under his shirt." There reportedly were not any security or police officers nearby when the shooting occurred.
Fabien Levy, a spokesman for Mayor Eric Adams' office, told Deadline, "The safety of all New Yorkers is our top priority. No shooting is acceptable, which is why we are working every day to get illegal guns off New York City streets."
Levy added, "The NYPD is actively investigating the fatal shooting of a crew member of 'Law and Order: Organized Crime' early this morning. We offer our deepest condolences to the victim’s family, friends, and co-workers during this difficult time, and will work diligently to bring the suspect to justice and stem the tide of gun violence we are seeing."
"Law & Order: Organized Crime" airs on NBC and stars franchise icon Christopher Meloni.
The New York Times reports an NBC and Universal Television spokeswoman said in a statement following the shooting, "We were terribly saddened and shocked to hear that one of our crew members was the victim of a crime early this morning and has died as a result. We are working with local law enforcement as they continue to investigate."
Police have reportedly not made any arrests yet.
