Colorado dentist accused of poisoning his wife to death in 'complex and calculated murder'

AURORA, Colo. (TCD) -- A 45-year-old dentist was arrested over the weekend after he allegedly poisoned his wife, leaving her brain dead and killing her.

According to the Aurora Police Department, on Wednesday, March 15, James Toliver Craig drove his 43-year-old wife to a local hospital because she was suffering from "severe headaches and dizziness." When she got to the hospital, her health reportedly "deteriorated rapidly," and she was placed on a ventilator in the intensive care unit.

Soon, hospital staff declared her medically brain dead.

Doctors opted to take the woman off life support, and the Aurora Police Department Major Crimes Homicide Unit began investigating her "suspicious death." Detectives reportedly determined she had been poisoned, so they issued a warrant for Craig’s arrest on a charge of first-degree murder.

Major Crimes Unit Division Chief Mark Hildebrand said, "When the suspicious details of this case came to light, our team of officers and homicide detectives tirelessly worked to uncover the truth behind the victim’s sudden illness and death."

He added, "It was quickly discovered this was in fact a heinous, complex and calculated murder. I am very proud of our Major Crimes Homicide Unit’s hard work in solving this case and pursuing justice for the victim."

Craig was arrested in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 19.
