DAYTON, Ky. (TCD) -- A 32-year-old mother was recently sentenced to 35 years in prison for the fatal beating of her 1-year-old son in 2019.
According to a press release from the Dayton Police Department, on August 16, 2019, the Bellevue-Dayton Fire Department responded to 401 5th Ave. to a report of an unresponsive 1-year-old child, Sean Buttery Jr.
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, the child's mother, Stacey Schuchart, was home alone with her son and her 3-year-old daughter on the day of the crime. She reportedly called 911 and said her son wasn't breathing after he hit his head on the microwave.
The 1-year-old victim was reportedly found in critical condition with severe injuries, not just to his head. The child was transported to the Cincinnati Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after, police say.
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, an autopsy report revealed the child was fatally beaten. There were reportedly bruises surrounding the child's head and injuries to his brain and eyes that were caused by blunt impacts. According to documents obtained by the Cincinnati Enquirer, the child had injuries to his pelvis that were consistent with being stomped on or hit with a heavy object on the floor.
Police say Schuchart was arrested and charged with first-degree manslaughter.
The children were reportedly not allowed to be in Schuchart's care and had been living illegally with her for almost a month. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, the children were placed in the temporary custody of Schuchart's sister as ordered by the court.
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, in February 2022, Schuchart pleaded guilty to one count of murder after initially pleading not guilty in November 2019.
On Tuesday, March 29, Schuchart was sentenced to 35 years in prison, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. She is ordered not to contact Sean's father or any of the child's siblings.
