DAVIS COUNTY, Utah (TCD) -- An 18-year-old was taken into custody for allegedly stabbing two women and admitting to authorities he wanted to kill other people — including his family.
According to the Davis County Sheriff’s Office, on Thursday, May 12, at 6:42 p.m., deputies responded to a call about an incident at Mueller Park and located a victim suffering from stab wounds. She was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Not long after, there was a report about an assault at a business, and the Sheriff’s Office says the two incidents appear to be related.
In a statement, the Davis County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect, Kane Fairbank, "lured an 18-year-old woman to Mueller Park" after having met a few days prior on a dating app. Fairbank and the female teen, who remained unnamed, were at the park for "several hours" when he allegedly stabbed her several times.
The victim fought back and waved down witnesses after escaping from him. The witnesses, two of whom were nurses and another an EMT, reportedly "helped create a barrier between Fairbank and the victim." The nurses and EMT helped the victim with first aid while someone else called 911.
Fairbank allegedly drove to a gas station in Bountiful and abandoned his vehicle. He allegedly went up to a 64-year-old woman at random and stabbed her. She, too, fought back and witnesses helped her until first responders arrived. Fairbank once again fled but was ultimately detained by a good Samaritan until deputies arrested him.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Fairbank "told detectives he intended to carry out the attacks and had planned for other assaults."
The two victims are in stable condition.
According to court documents cited by KSL-TV, Fairbank reportedly told detectives he had been planning his date’s killing ever since he matched with her on Tinder. He reportedly invited her to the park "with the intent of luring her into his car and killing her."
Fairbank allegedly said he wanted his victims to be "vulnerable." Among those on his list were his family, KSL reports. Court documents say Fairbank "talked in length about killing his parents and siblings with a pickax that he had at his house."
He was booked in the Davis County Jail on two counts of attempted murder, two counts of obstruction of justice, and aggravated kidnapping. He is being held without bail.
