DES MOINES, Iowa (TCD) -- A 22-year-old Florida man was arrested in Minnesota after he allegedly took an Uber to a local bank, robbed it, then carjacked the Uber driver and fled.
According to a Des Moines Police Department news release cited by WOI-TV, on Wednesday, Nov. 30, Javier Camacho-Cepeda reportedly called an Uber, which dropped him off at the Chase Bank on the 6100 block of SE 14th Street. Camacho-Cepeda went into the bank, reportedly showed he had a gun, and left with some money.
After allegedly robbing the bank, he got back in the Uber, and they left. The driver soon called police to report he had been carjacked while he was stopped on the 3200 block of SE 14th Street.
WHO-TV reports Camacho-Cepeda was apprehended in northern Minnesota near the U.S.-Canada border and booked on two counts of first-degree robbery.
According to KCCI-TV, officials from the Lake County Sheriff's Office found a gun and cash in the stolen car.
Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek told WHO they "quickly" identified Camacho-Cepeda as the suspect after receiving information from the Uber driver and bank officials.
Parizek said, "The only thing that makes this unique is that, you know, he took the Uber there, and he took the Uber away. According to the Uber driver, there wasn’t a lot of indication that anything had gone wrong while he was in the bank."
