BATAVIA TOWNSHIP, Ohio (TCD) -- A 20-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of throwing his 2-week-old son against a headboard, causing critical injuries.
On Friday, Dec. 8, shortly after 1 p.m., the Clermont County Sheriff's Office received a report from Children's Protective Services regarding a 2-week-old baby who had been transported to Cincinnati Children's Hospital by his mother for a possible eye infection. After further examination, medical staff observed additional injuries, including a skull fracture, mouth injuries, and arm and leg bruising.
The baby was admitted into the hospital, and physicians determined the child's injuries were "non-accidental and a result of recent trauma."
Sheriff's office detectives spoke with the baby's parents and later learned the victim's injuries were sustained in their home, which led to detectives obtaining and executing a search warrant.
According to the sheriff's office, the victim's father, Dezmond Wallace, told detectives he caused the child's injuries on the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 6. Wallace reportedly told investigators he threw his infant son against the headboard of a bed, WCPO-TV reports.
Wallace was booked into the Clermont County Jail on charges of second-degree endangering children and second-degree felonious assault. He appeared in court on Monday, Dec. 11, and his bond was set at $1 million.
The Clermont County Prosecutor's Office may file additional charges pending the investigation.
The sheriff's office did not disclose the victim's current condition.
