CHICAGO (TCD) -- A 37-year-old convicted felon was arrested this week for allegedly killing an 11-year-old boy and injuring the child's mother just one day after he was released on parole.
According to the Chicago Police Department, on Wednesday, March 13, Crosetti Brand allegedly went to a residence on the 5900 block of North Ravenswood Avenue and allegedly stabbed the two victims. The 11-year-old boy died from his injuries and the 33-year-old woman was critically injured. Her 5-year-old son was also present but remained unharmed.
Brand fled the scene following the stabbing, but was apprehended hours later.
Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said in a press conference that although the 5-year-old was not physically wounded, he will be emotionally impacted.
Snelling said, "We have to imagine what the 5-year-old will deal with for the rest of his life after witnessing something so brutal. Just imagine the level of trauma this 5-year-old is suffering through."
Brand was serving out a 16-year sentence for home invasion and aggravated assault, but he has previously been convicted of other crimes. He was released on parole last year but went back to prison after violating a protective order. Snelling said Brand has three orders of protection against him, including one from the victim.
He was released again on March 12.
The next day, he allegedly forced his way into the woman's home as she was getting ready to take her children to school. The 11-year-old boy, who was identified as Jayden Perkins, reportedly died while trying to save his mother's life.
Chicago Police announced Friday that Brand is being charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, home invasion with a dangerous weapon, armed robbery, aggravated domestic battery, felon in the possession of a weapon, and violation of protective order.
Perkins' school started a fundraiser for him and said he was an "exceptional young man" who got straight A's, was the lead in school plays, and participated in several extracurricular activities.
The adult victim had been in a relationship with Brand about 15 years ago and had a lifetime order of protection against him.
Snelling said at the press conference, "Along with being brutally attack and stabbed multiple times, and dealing with that trauma, she has to face that fact that she will never see, touch, hug her 11-year-old son. She’s lost him forever."
He also said, "This should've never happened."
