6-year-old boy dies after he and his brother play with loaded gun, firing it

RACELAND, La. (TCD) -- A 6-year-old boy died this week after he and his brother found a loaded gun in their home and started playing with it, which caused it to fire and strike the child.
According to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office, on Wednesday, Feb. 22, deputies responded to a call at a residence on the 2000 block of Louisiana Highway 182 in Raceland after a man called to report a child had been shot and was unresponsive. Officials administered CPR at the scene and transported the boy to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Sheriff's Office identified the victim as 6-year-old Davonta "D.J." Michel Jr.
D.J. and his brother, also 6, reportedly found a loaded handgun in a bedroom and started playing with it. Then, the gun discharged, hitting D.J.
D.J. was in the first grade at Lockport Lower Elementary School.
