JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (TCD) -- A homicide investigation is underway after unknown suspects allegedly threw a large rock into a 20-year-old woman’s windshield, killing her.
According to a news release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, on April 19 at approximately 10:45 p.m., Alexa Bartell was driving near the 10600 block of Indiana Street when suspects threw a large rock at her car, which hit and killed her. Investigators believe the unknown suspects threw the rock from another car or from the side of the road.
Moments before her death, Bartell was reportedly talking on the phone with a friend, and the phone went silent. The Sheriff’s Office said Bartell’s friend was able to track the phone and found Bartell deceased in her car, which had gone off the road and into a field.
In their news release, the Sheriff’s Office said the incident "appears to be part of an overnight crime series." There were reportedly five incidents of rocks being thrown at cars that night.
The Sheriff’s Office tracked down a light-colored Dodge Ram that might have been connected to the case, but in an update posted April 20, the Sheriff’s Office confirmed the truck and its owner were not involved with Bartell’s death. Investigators are still looking for possible suspects and have asked anyone with information regarding these crimes to come forward.
Jacki Kelley, the public information officer for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, told KDVR-TV, "These are not games, these are people’s lives."
