VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (TCD) -- A male U.S. Navy sailor and a woman were arrested for allegedly killing a man with a dumbbell and throwing away his belongings.
Virginia Beach Police said officers responded to a residence on the 1200 block of Edenham Court on March 11 at around 7:30 a.m. When they arrived, they found a deceased male who was later identified as 45-year-old Herbert Bryant.
Investigators identified 41-year-old Jason Jablonski as the suspect and charged him with second-degree murder. Heather Totty, 35, was also taken into custody for accessory to murder after the fact.
According to the Virginian-Pilot, Jablonski has been in the Navy for 12 years. Court records cited by the paper allege Jablonski was on a "crack bender" when he attacked Bryant with a dumbbell. He allegedly hit Bryant in the face with the exercise tool and then pressed it down on Bryant’s neck until he stopped moving.
Totty allegedly "attempted to clean up the scene, collecting the victim’s belongings in a bag which police later found in a trash dumpster," according to court documents cited by WAVY-TV. Totty is accused of helping Jablonski move Bryant’s body outside to a staircase.
A neighbor told WAVY she saw Bryant and "thought he was just sleeping." When she returned minutes later, she realized he was dead.
Virginia Beach Jail records show Jablonski and Totty are being held without bond.
