Detroit man accused of fatally strangling girlfriend, stabbing her, and burning part of her body

DETROIT (TCD) -- Police arrested a 42-year-old man this week on suspicion of fatally strangling and stabbing his 48-year-old girlfriend.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced Thursday, June 15, that her office charged Cortez Coleman with first-degree murder in connection with Stacy Smith’s death.
According to Worthy, on the night of Friday, June 9, shortly after 11:20 p.m., Detroit Police responded to a home on the 20340 block of Berg Road, where they found Smith deceased in her bedroom. Police reportedly noticed a burn on her right leg, as well as a stab wound to the chest. Prosecutors allege Coleman strangled his girlfriend, Smith, stabbed her with a knife, and burned her right leg before fleeing the home.
Police arrested Coleman on Monday, June 12.
Coleman was arraigned Thursday, June 15. He is scheduled to appear in court for a probable cause conference July 5 and a preliminary examination on July 12.
