HOUMA, La. (TCD) -- A 39-year-old woman was arrested after police allege she burned her 5-year-old child with a cigarette because she was upset.
According to a statement, on Tuesday, May 2, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Houma Police Department officers were called to West Houma School due to suspected child abuse. School officials reportedly noticed the burn mark on the child and contacted police.
Houma Police began investigating and said it was "immediately apparent that there was some type of abuse occurring to the child."
Police identified the child's mother as Amanda Henderson and said Henderson allegedly burned the victim "as she was frustrated with issues in her life."
Terrebonne Parish Jail records show Henderson was booked May 3 on a charge of cruelty to a juvenile. A judge set her bond at $50,000.
According to Houma Police, the child is now in another family member's custody.
