TULSA, Okla. (TCD) -- A 12-year-old girl is reportedly in police custody after she allegedly killed her younger brother last week.
According to Tulsa Police, on Thursday, Jan. 5, at 11:43 p.m., officers from the department’s Riverside Division responded to a stabbing call on the 1000 block of 64th Place South. Paramedics and Tulsa firefighters were reportedly already at the scene by the time officers arrived.
The first responders were performing CPR on a 9-year-old boy, police said.
Tulsa Police officers learned the victim’s 12-year-old sister woke her parent up and said she stabbed the boy. He was transported to a hospital and taken in for surgery, but he died from his wounds Jan. 6 around 2:30 a.m.
The 12-year-old girl was reportedly taken into custody and is at the Family Center for Juvenile Justice.
Tulsa Police Capt. Richard Meulenberg told KTUL-TV the boy’s death was a "real tearjerker" and "really terrible."
He said, "It’s hard to think about anybody taking someone else’s life. It’s especially hard when you’re talking about a child to another child’s life and even more so when you’re talking about siblings."
Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin tweeted the press release and wrote, "All homicides are tragic, but the 2nd homicide of 2023 in Tulsa shows a definitive societal problem. The question is, how does society address a child killing another child?"
The Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office told KTUL a juvenile must be 13 years old in order to be tried as an adult.
Police are still investigating a motive.
