TUCSON, Ariz. (TCD) -- A 84-year-old man who was convicted of armed bank robbery was sentenced to 262 months in federal prison Tuesday.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona announced Robert Francis Krebs must also serve five years of supervised release after his term is up. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, on January 12, 2018, Krebs reportedly robbed two bank tellers at a Pyramid Federal Credit Union using a BB gun. Krebs reportedly stole more than $8,000, which he was ordered by a federal judge to repay in restitution.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office wrote Krebs was arrested January 13, 2018, at a motel where he was staying. The Tucson Police Department announced at the time that a hotel employee saw Krebs attempt to check in at the hotel, but he ultimately left before doing so.
According to the Arizona Daily Star, Krebs' criminal background extends back to the 1960s for other theft and robbery charges. In 1966, he was reportedly convicted in Chicago for embezzling $72,000 from a bank where he worked. He served more than 30 years for a 1981 bank robbery in Florida, the Arizona Daily Star reports.
Krebs also reportedly was convicted of robbing other Tucson-area banks in 1980 and 1988.
According to the Arizona Daily Star, after his 2018 robbery, Krebs reportedly went across the street to a mall and found his wheelchair, which he had "stashed at the Sears store."
The Associated Press reports Krebs did not wear a disguise during the 2018 robbery because he wanted to go back to prison. Erin Carrillo, Krebs’'attorney, reportedly said Krebs wanted to "get out of the freedom business and go back to the penitentiary."
