LAS VEGAS (TCD) -- A 22-year-old woman has been charged with attempted murder after she allegedly tried killing the baby she just gave birth to with a blanket.
According to an arrest report cited by KLAS-TV, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police responded to a call from the emergency room at Mountain View Hospital Saturday, March 26, about a woman who was "bleeding profusely" but would not come inside.
The woman, Ashley Hollingsworth, had reportedly just given birth in a toilet and allegedly attempted to suffocate the newborn. The arrest report says Hollingsworth allegedly wrapped a "blanket around the baby’s head and was pushing the blanket against the baby’s face."
Doctors reportedly noted the child was not injured.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal, which also cites the arrest report, says Hollingsworth had the baby in the guest bathroom at her aunt and uncle's house. They reportedly discovered the infant in the toilet. The aunt and uncle reportedly drove Hollingsworth to the hospital, which is when she allegedly tried smothering the little girl.
Hollingsworth was reportedly found about two hours later with wounds. She allegedly told police she was "beat up by a rock."
KLAS reports Hollingsworth told police she thought the baby was "probably evil." She also allegedly said there was "something evil" in her body that was "trying to kill" the child.
Police reportedly noted, "After seeing the baby’s eyes, smelling what she described as an abnormal scent, and the baby grunting at her, Ashley decided to wrap the blanket around the baby’s head."
According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Hollingsworth has two other children who live with their father in California.
Clark County Jail inmate information shows Hollingsworth was booked on charges of attempted murder and child abuse or neglect. She is being held without bail.
