FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. (TCD) -- A 17-year-old special needs student faces charges after allegedly attacking a teacher's aide because she confiscated his Nintendo game.
On Feb. 21, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office School Resource Deputies assigned to Matanzas High School learned about the attack and responded to the scene. There, deputies reportedly found the female victim "on the ground with severe injuries."
According to WESH-TV, the 17-year-old suspect allegedly ran after the teacher's aide after she took away his Nintendo game, and then he pushed her, causing her to go airborne and lose consciousness.
Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly told WESH, "This could have been homicide. When you push people like that, they hit their head, you never know the outcome."
The student, who is 6-foot-7 and weighs 270 pounds, allegedly continued to attack the teacher's aide while she was on the ground. He also reportedly spat on the teacher's aide and threatened to kill her.
Because of the school's large size, it took several minutes for deputies to arrive, and Staly told WESH that other students and school staff were able to intervene before their arrival.
The student, whose name was not disclosed, was reportedly charged with felony aggravated battery with bodily harm and was eventually turned over to the Department of Juvenile Justice. He also faces possible school discipline and expulsion.
According to WESH, the victim started working with the school district in 2004 and became a teacher's aide at Matanzas High School in 2021.
