JACKSON, Miss. (TCD) -- A 21-year-old man stands accused of fatally beating his 42-year-old mother.
According to WAPT-TV, on Wednesday, June 15, Dekarius Funches allegedly beat Latasha Funches to death with a hammer at a home on Lakewood Drive and fled the scene. It was reportedly the victim's daughter who initially found the body and called authorities.
Jackson Police Deputy Chief Derick Hearn told WAPT, "He took his mother's vehicle. He drove it out to North Jackson somewhere, and he took a vehicle from that Jackson location." A high-speed chase reportedly followed the incident.
The chase continued north on I-55, and the Madison County Sheriff's Department pursed Funches north of Madison, but they eventually lost sight of him, according to WLBT-TV.
Funches was reportedly found and caught near mile marker 193 in Carroll County, and he was charged with murder and auto theft.
Authorities do not know the suspect's motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
