Stewart Funeral Home wrote in a statement Tuesday, "We extend our deepest condolences to the families who were targeted and impacted by today’s unimaginable tragedy following a sacred ritual. Stewart Funeral Home stands in solidarity to confront what is a national crisis of gun violence."
The note continued, "At this time, we are unable to share additional details as today’s shooting is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department. We implore local, regional, and national leaders to take meaningful action to reduce gun violence and make our communities safer."
Metro Police Chief Robert Contee III spoke at a press conference following the shooting and called it a "brazen" act of violence.
He said, "It’s unfortunate that someone would be so brazen to do such an act, let alone at a funeral. How low can you be of a human being to target other people at a funeral?"
Contee believes the suspect or suspects "specifically targeted" some of the people at the funeral.
