FRESNO, Calif. (TCD) -- A 22-year-old man was arrested after allegedly calling 911 and reporting that he shot both of his parents.
According to a press release from the Fresno Police Department, on Sunday, April 10, at approximately 3:30 p.m., officers from the Northeast Policing District responded to the 6100 block of North Tenth Street to a report of shots fired. The suspect, Julian McElhaney, reportedly called dispatchers and said he shot both his parents.
According to police, officers found McElhaney waiting in the front yard of the home upon their arrival. Police say they discovered the two victims, 55-year-old William McElhaney and 64-year-old Sylvia McElhaney, dead at the scene.
Fresno Police Lt. Mark Hudson told KFSN-TV, "We found the suspect on the front lawn and two dead parents. One on the front lawn and one inside the house."
In a press conference, Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama said officers recovered several firearms inside the home.
Authorities reportedly believe mental health could have played a role in the shooting, though it was not confirmed.
Balderrama mentioned the suspect’s father, William, worked in maintenance and operations for Clovis Unified School District.
According to KFSN, Clovis Unified said in a statement, "The Clovis Unified School District team is mourning the tragic loss of 19-year employee Will McElhaney in yesterday’s double homicide. Will has been a much-loved member of our plant operations crew since 2003, where he specialized in carpet installation and repair."
The statement continued, "We are shocked and saddened beyond words over the murders of Will and his wife, Sylvia."
The victims’ son was reportedly arrested and booked into the Fresno County Jail on murder charges.
