PLAINVIEW, Texas (TCD) -- The FBI is reportedly investigating an incident that occurred at an elementary school last month when a first-grader allegedly performed a sex act on another student while a teacher was present.
KCBD-TV reports a classmate allegedly made the 6-year-old girl go under a desk and perform a sexual act on him while a different student recorded the encounter on a school-issued iPad. The girl’s cousin told KCBD she "was hitting him with the poetry book" as a way of fighting him off.
According to a statement provided to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, the alleged assault occurred April 19 in a classroom at South Elementary School when the students were "away from the full vision of the teacher" because the teacher was working with another group of kids in the class.
The next day, April 20, the teacher reportedly "noticed a group of students off-task in the technology station" and took the electronics away from the students. The teacher reportedly saw that one of the students set a password on the device and she took it to administrators to get it unlocked by the technology department. A tech employee unlocked the device Friday, April 21, which is when they found the "inappropriate content."
According to the statement, school officials contacted the parents and guardians of the students in the video. One guardian answered, while the other was not available until Monday, April 24. The school informed the parents and guardians that they would contact Child Protective Services, and they locked the iPad in the Plainview Independent School District Police’s evidence room. A CPS investigator looked into the video and shared his findings with school officials April 27.
The statement said the teacher was placed on administrative leave amid the investigation.
After news of the alleged incident became public, several parents began protesting outside the school. The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reports Plainview schools canceled classes Monday, May 8, due to various threats.
On May 8, the Plainview Independent School District released a statement saying officials are working with the FBI about the events at South Elementary. The statement also said the investigation was submitted to the Hale County District Attorney’s Office for evaluation.
As of Wednesday, May 10, the website for Plainview South Elementary was taken down.
