HOUSTON (TCD) -- Police are actively searching for a suspect who stands accused of fatally stabbing one man and assaulting another over the weekend.
According to a press release from the Houston Police Department, on Sunday, March 6, at approximately 10 p.m., officers responded to 3000 Durwood St., where they found 36-year-old Alejandro Mejia deceased in the roadway. He had reportedly suffered a fatal stab wound to the chest.
According to police, Edwin Henriquez-Cuellar was identified as the suspect. He is reportedly charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Upon further investigation, police learned Mejia, the victim, was in a romantic relationship with the suspect’s ex-girlfriend. Henriquez-Cuellar and his ex-girlfriend allegedly have a juvenile daughter together. According to police, the suspect and victim argued via text messages because the victim accused Henriquez-Cuellar of "not caring for his daughter."
According to police, Henriquez-Cuellar drove to his ex-girlfriend’s home and took his daughter. Mejia, his brother, and others reportedly started to look for the daughter and Henriquez-Cuellar.
According to police, Henriquez-Cuellar questioned his daughter as they drove through the neighborhood. She allegedly opened the door, asking to leave. Police say Henriquez-Cuellar allowed her to get out of his truck, and he drove away.
As he drove away, Henriquez-Cuellar was reportedly confronted by Mejia, his brother, and the girl’s family. While holding a large knife, Henriquez-Cuellar allegedly got out of his truck and swung it at Mejia’s brother and then he stabbed Mejia. Witnesses told police they saw Mejia collapse to the ground after the stabbing.
Henriquez-Cuellar reportedly fled the scene in a blue Toyota Tacoma pickup truck on Durwood Street and headed northbound on Bentley Street. According to police, Henriquez-Cuellar also drives a red Dodge Ram pickup truck with the following license plate number: FPR-3717.
