SAN CARLOS, Calif. (TCD) -- A suspect was taken into custody Thursday after he allegedly beheaded a woman with a sword during an argument.
According to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, on Thursday, Sept. 8, at 11:50 a.m., deputies were flagged down in San Carlos to respond to an assault in progress near Magnolia Avenue and Laurel Street. Deputies reportedly arrived a few minutes later and found an adult female deceased.
The suspect reportedly returned to the scene and was taken into custody for suspicion of murder. NBC Bay Area identified the suspect as Jose Landaeta Solano and the victim as 27-year-old Karina Castro.
In their statement, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said the suspect "was known to the victim," and they believed it was an isolated incident.
NBC Bay Area reports Castro was the mother of two young children and had a restraining order against Solano. Investigators reportedly believe Solano used a samurai sword to behead the victim.
At a press conference, San Mateo County Lt. Eamonn Allen said in a press conference he does not believe the children were present when Castro was killed and that she was "obviously deceased" when deputies arrived.
Allen called the crime "shocking" and said deputies who first arrived were "beset by the scene."
The altercation reportedly occurred in the street outside the victim's residence. Investigators are reportedly securing warrants to search both Castro and Solano's residences.
San Mateo County Jail records show Solano was booked on a murder charge and is being held without bail.
