THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (TCD) -- A 21-year-old man faces charges after allegedly attacking his parents with a hammer, injuring his father and fatally striking his mother.
Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko announced Dec. 20 that Scott Goldberg was arraigned on charges of murder and assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the deadly attack against his parents, whom he lived with. He also faces special allegations charges of use of a deadly weapon, crimes committed with great bodily injury, crime involved great violence, and defendant was armed with and used a weapon at the time of the commission of the crime.
He pleaded not guilty and denied the special allegations.
On Nov. 19, shortly after 10:50 p.m., the Ventura County Sheriff's Office responded to the 200 block of Mayfield Court, where they found Goldberg's mother, 63-year-old Alison Marshall, "suffering from significant and life-threatening injuries." She was transported to a hospital via ambulance to treat multiple skull fractures and a brain injury.
Prosecutors allege Goldberg hit Marshall in the head with a hammer. Goldberg's father reportedly heard her scream and headed upstairs when Goldberg allegedly hit him with the hammer as well.
Weeks after the attack, Marshall died in hospice care on Dec. 1. The district attorney's office did not disclose the condition of the suspect's father.
Ventura County Sheriff’s Office deputies took Goldberg into custody, and he remains held in the Ventura County Jail without bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 28, 2024.
