1 student dead, another in critical condition following shooting outside Minnesota school

RICHFIELD, Minn. (TCD) -- One student has been pronounced dead and another is in critical condition following a shooting outside a school on Feb. 1.
According to a press release from the Richfield Police Department, the shooting happened at approximately 12:07 p.m. at the South Education Center, 7450 Penn Ave. S. Upon officers’ arrival, they reportedly found two students who had been shot on the sidewalk near the school entrance.
Police say the suspect fled the scene immediately.
According to police, the wounded students were brought to the Hennepin County Medical Center. One student reportedly succumbed to his injuries, and the other remains in critical condition. Police did not release the victims’ names.
According to WCCO-TV, the families of the two students were notified about the incident.
Nearby schools were reportedly placed on lockdown. After searching the school and surrounding area, police say they determined no further threat, and the lockdowns were lifted.
Police Chief Jay Henthorne told WCCO this had been a "tragic day in the city of Richfield."
According to WCCO, the same school went into lockdown in September when a student was found with a handgun. That student was reportedly taken into custody, and no one was hurt.
