WILSON COUNTY, Texas (TCD) -- A woman who was the legal guardian of three of her grandchildren was sentenced to 25 years in prison for starving the kids and abusing them.
The 81st Judicial District Attorney’s Office announced Samantha Foster’s sentence on Feb. 18 and added that she will serve 10 years of probation. Foster initially pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree injury to a child causing bodily injury but then switched her plea to guilty.
The District Attorney’s Office called the starvation the children endured "severe" and added, "two of the children were likely within days of death."
According to WOAI-TV, the children were taken out of Foster’s home in May 2020. The owner of the home who reportedly rented it to Foster said, "It was nothing like I expected. Feces in several rooms of the house smeared everywhere, pretty much."
An affidavit cited by WOAI says Foster and her husband took custody of the children, who were 4, 2, and 16 months old at the time. Foster’s daughter reportedly told investigators that the grandchildren would be left in the room for days at a time without being fed and that Foster would hit the children "for fun." Court records said Foster’s husband reportedly made the children "eat their bowel movements if they pooped in their diapers."
The District Attorney’s Office said the children are healthy now and in the care of foster parents. Foster will be eligible for parole after 12 1/2 years.
