ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. (TCD) -- A 34-year-old man was recently found guilty of killing his 43-year-old live-in girlfriend in 2021 as she was trying to move out of their shared home.
According to a news release from Colorado’s 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, on Nov. 27, 2021, Monica Medina was packing her things with her father’s help. Medina and her father reportedly placed the belongings into her father’s parked truck, and they drove separately in Medina’s red Audi and her white Mercedes to a gas station nearby.
At the gas station, the District Attorney’s Office said Medina’s father got out of the white Mercedes and entered Medina’s Audi with his daughter, and they drove back toward her home together.
When they arrived back at the home, Medina’s boyfriend, Jeffrey Aschenbrenner, was reportedly "waiting for them across the street from where Medina’s father’s truck was parked" and then Aschenbrenner "proceeded to fire three shots."
Medina and her father drove off in the Audi as Aschenbrenner followed them and shot at the car. According to the District Attorney’s Office, one of the bullets hit Medina in the hip, and she was transported to a local hospital, where she later died.
On Feb. 23, the District Attorney’s Office announced Aschenbrenner was convicted of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and second-degree attempted murder following a five-day jury trial. He is set to be sentenced on April 13.
In a statement, District Attorney Brian Mason said, "This was a deplorable and cowardly crime."
Mason continued, "The defendant’s actions took a life and destroyed countless others. I am grateful for the work of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office in investigating this case and for my team at the District Attorney’s Office for their work in securing this conviction."
