Florida babysitter accused of taking drugs, falling asleep, and fatally suffocating 9-week-old child

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (TCD) -- A 40-year-old woman was arrested after allegedly taking drugs, falling asleep, and suffocating a 9-week-old child she was babysitting.
According to a press release from the Bay County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a home on June 6, 2021. At the scene, authorities reportedly discovered Mary Evans and the 9-week-old child she was babysitting unresponsive.
Upon further investigation, the Sheriff's Office determined that Evans bought narcotics earlier that day. She reportedly crushed and snorted the pills prior to watching the baby. The Sheriff's Office says a blue pill located at the crime scene was tested and confirmed to be pressed fentanyl. Additionally, the pill reportedly matched the description of the narcotics Evans bought that day. Based on Evans' statement, the Sheriff's Office says there were two remaining pills she purchased.
According to the Sheriff's Office, Evans was located "sitting on the side of her bed, with her upper body completely covering the child." Evans and the child were reportedly transported to the hospital. The Sheriff's Office says Evans was revived, but the child succumbed to its injuries.
Evans was reportedly arrested and charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child. According to the Sheriff's Office, Evans was booked into the Bay County Jail and is awaiting her first court appearance.
